Fayetteville
Cheryl A. Boudreaux, 63, of Fayetteville died Monday, July 14, 2008. Arrangements will be announced by Nelson-Berna Funeral Home and Crematory of Fayetteville.
Carolyn Marie Courtney, 86, of Fayetteville died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Windcrest Health and Rehabilitation in Springdale. She was born April 17, 1922, during a hurricane, in Cal Allen, Texas, to Jeanne Brooks Smith and Otto Alvin Smith. Her daughter, Lynda Courtney of Austin, Texas; her son, Michael Courtney and daughter-in-law, Miriam Hudson-Courtney of Fayetteville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren survive her. As a child, Marie and her mother worked as migrant farm laborers in Texas, Arkansas and Wyoming. Later, she entered nursing school in Corpus Christi, Texas, and ear ned her R. N. degree. In 1944, she married James Eisely, a Navy aviator. The next year, Mr. Eisley’s plane went missing during a patrol in the Bermuda Triangle. Shortly thereafter, Marie received a draft notice, which she declined, and, instead, moved to Fayetteville to work at City Hospital as a nurse for the next four years.
In 1948, she married William Courtney and moved to Wynne, where they published The Wynne Progress, a small-town weekly newspaper. While her husband wrote and edited the newspaper, Marie worked as a printer and raised their two children.
In 1970, Marie returned to nursing and served as a cardiac critical care nurse and an emergency medical technician. She did this until 1987, when she retired, partly because of her husband’s death. After taking stock of her life for a year and learning how to drive a car (sort of ), she accepted Michael and Miriam’s invitation to move to Fayetteville and take up another role, that of grandmother. Marie was active in the First United Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, serving as an office volunteer for the next 18 years until late 2005, when she survived (by sheer resolve ) a brain aneurysm that triggered her final retirement at age 83. Failing health and an increasing need for assistance led her back to City Hospital and later to Windcrest, where she received loving care from both wonderful staffs. Love always surrounded Marie. She faced her life and her death with dignity and courage. A memorial service will celebrate the life of Marie Courtney at 2 p. m. Friday at the First United Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, 695 Calvin. In lieu of flowers, you may direct memorials to Windcrest Health and Rehabilitation in care of John McPherson, 2455 N. Lowell Road, Springdale, AR 72764. Donations will benefit the patients’ social environment.

Tulsa, Okla.
Jeffery Lynn Liner, 54, of Tulsa, Okla., passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, in St. Francis Hospital after a long and tragic illness. Attending were his wife, Kathy, and parents, Ruben and JoAnn Liner. Also surviving are siblings, Robert, Christopher and Elizabeth Liner; stepchildren, Jay and Chanel Stanphill and Heather Fulton-Burrows; grandchildren, Gracie and Griffin Fulton; three nephews, David, Kevin and Thomas Liner; and one niece, Samantha Liner. It is no mean feat to describe briefly such a man. While born in El Paso, Texas, he spent all of his school years in Tulsa, graduating in 1971 from Will Rogers High School. After a family move to Fayetteville, he attended the University of Arkansas. He was a fine athlete and briefly joined the Razorbacks as a walk-on safety. He earned BS and MS degrees in geology. In his professional life he held positions with Cities Service, Mitchell Energy and, most recently, Panther Energy. But these dry facts only take us so far.
As a geology student, his college career was boisterous, fun and protracted. He branded those around him with a bold, infectious sense of humor and paved the way in geology for two brothers and two nephews. He loved the science of geology as few do, not simply as a job but as a passion. Other interests included astronomy, physics and computing. He was a thoughtful and voracious reader with a keen memory, meaning near certain defeat for any crossword puzzle or Scrabble opponent. Another side of Jeff was little known outside of family and close friends. He was superbly gifted at poetry, songwriting, guitar and (like his mother ) singing. There was no ambition for the stage or the limelight; he wrote as therapy to process the impressions of a complex world through a complex man. Like so many who are gifted, he could be moody, temperamental and sensitive, but he was also quick to laugh, love and help any man who was down. One thing is certain: Jeff was taken from us long before we were ready to let him go, long before we were willing to let him go, long before we are able to let him go. Rest in peace and know that you are deeply loved. A memorial service will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Beard’s Funeral Chapel. An online condolence may be sent to the family at www. beardsfuneralchapel. com.
