An 18-year-old former day care worker from Springdale faces a 40-year prison sentence after pleading guilty Tuesday to sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl.

Cesar Monarrez Jr. was charged in February with rape. Monarrez is accused of the rapes while working at Royal Children’s Academy in Springdale when he was providing child care for the victim. He was never allowed to return to work after his arrest.

Prosecutors amended charges last week to add a second count of rape, after interviews with the victim revealed a second incident. Each rape charge carries a sentence ranging from 10 to 40 years or life in prison upon conviction.

Monarrez pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree sexual assault, a lesser charge which includes a sentence of five to 20 years.

He agreed in the negotiated plea to serve the maximum sentence of 20 years on each count. The sentences run consecutively for a total of 40 years. He was allowed to remain out on his existing bond until July 28.

The day care facility apparently went out of business last month. The listed phone number for the academy is not a working number.
