Teachers bring in big grants

West Fork High School has been awarded a $ 58, 654 grant from the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education, Principal John Karnes announced.
The grant was awarded to Jo Lawson, West Fork business teacher, to enhance the school's multimedia program.
The funds will be used to upgrade computers for the multimedia program, and the older computers will be moved to other areas, Karnes said.
"We'll have the flat screen monitors, which will allow for more efficient use of space," Lawson said. "There'll be 24 student computers."
"She will have a whole new computer lab," Karnes said. "Any time a school our size gets a grant like that, it has a huge impact."
The multimedia program includes a course section on video editing and producing DVDs, Lawson said.
Lawson said she wrote the grant application with assistance from the business teacher, Tracy Laird, who was awarded a $ 40, 700 grant last year from the Department of Workforce Education.
Also, Laird has been awarded a $ 2, 500 grant from Best Buy. This is the second time she has been awarded such a grant.
Laird received a $ 2, 500 grant in the 2005-2006 school year to purchase new desktop publishing computer software. The grants were available to teachers from schools within a 50-mile radius of Best Buy stores. The nearest Best Buy store to West Fork is in Fayetteville.
"I'm very appreciative of Jo and Tracy for their grant writing," Karnes said.
