Decatur youth getting ready

DECATUR ó Football practice for the Decatur Youth Sports fourth, fifth and sixth grade team began Friday. The team usually plays about eight games a season on Tuesday nights, according to coaches Bruce Bates and Darrell Bennett. They practice at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the high school football field. Anna Wilkinís daughter Cameron has played football with Decatur Youth Sports since second grade. ì Sheís a girl and she loves it, î Wilkins said. She pointed out that football is a good way for kids to burn off energy while learning the basics of the game. ì I think it keeps your kids out of trouble in the long run, î Wilkins said. Another mom, Gayla Bennett, said football teaches discipline, how to follow rules, and physical fitness. The team is still accepting new players, and Vicki Bates said she expects to see even more players after school starts. Bates said that Decatur Youth Sports has done several fundraisers over the past year to help kids pay for their equipment. The group has also received a $ 500 donation from DARP, a Decatur drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, and support from Pagnozzi Charities. The team is looking for volunteers to help with coaching and run the public address system and concession stands during the games. ì Any help we get is priceless; we appreciate it all, î Vicki Bates said.
Decatur Youth Sports is not associated with the school and accepts players who donít attend Decatur Public Schools. New players who would like to join the team can sign up at practice.
