CENTERTON - Eight firefighters from the Centerton Volunteer Fire Department will become part of a swiftwater rescue team, Fire Chief Jeff Coffelt said.

Centerton Day, an upcoming celebration in the city, will raise money to pay for training and equipment for the Centerton firefighters.

The team will consist of people from Centerton and Highfill, Coffelt said.

"Recently, we've started working on a combined effort as a swiftwater rescue team, and part of the funds coming from Centerton Day this year will go toward part of our expenditures on some of the training and the equipment for that," Coffelt said.

"To begin with, I'm going to have about eight guys from our department … and from Highfill. I think there are six, or somewhere in that range. We've got a pretty good team assembled," he said. "We'll be available to Benton County (and elsewhere ) … once we get everybody trained."

Centerton Day, the annual fundraiser that is also a celebration, will be held Saturday.

Two running events, a 5 K run and a 1-mile fun run, will start things off in the morning at the Sienna subdivision, behind the Sonic Drive-In on Arkansas Highway 102.

After that, other planned events will be held - including a Tiny Tot contest and performances by recording artist Rachel Raye and by a gospel quartet.

Other events will feature a parade, kids' games, the Air Evac and Eagle Med helicopters, and other activities, Coffelt said.

There will also be an auction during the day, he said.
