I'll pass on food from China
The letter written by Midge Garza (Sept. 27) brought to mind the many times I have turned over a product at the grocery only to find the words "country of origin: China."
I entirely agree with Ms. Garza's thoughts but would like to add the one that bothers me the most -- the safety of the products from China. The serious problems with dog food and baby formula were immediately apparent, but what will the long-term effects be from the foods that don't kill and/or sicken outright?
I have stopped buying items from China. This limits my choices quite a bit. No more seafood for the most part. I recently purchased salmon from Chile, but I am afraid that will eventually prove to be just a shade more consumable than Chinese foods. Where are the American fishermen selling? Why do we import mushrooms from China? Have we no growers in the U.S.? Just two examples out of thousands.
The "trickle-down effect"the pols speak of? Yes, the incredible greed, starting at the top and spreading like a virus. Disgusting.

A short history of the Bentonville tennis team
This is a note regarding the Bentonville tennis team's winning streak coming to an end.
I started the high-school tennis team in 1969. I was head basketball and assistant football coach for the high school. At the urging of Sam Walton, I started the team as a volunteer coach to provide tennis for the local kids.
One of the first players was Alice Walton. The first match we played was against Rogers. Alice defeated the No. 2 boys player for Rogers in her first match. Bentonville went on to win the school's first state championship in 1973 with Frank Cantrell, Rick Hood and Tom Greer making up the singles and doubles team.
